CLEARER Coaching Process

Coaching works best when a consistent, proven structure is relied on for facilitating growth and change. The use of a coaching process is based on two values I integrate into coaching. First, coaching is a partnership, therefore, the process shouldn’t be a secret that only the coach gets to know. Second, as an ICF Associate Certified Coach, I believe that using methods that are industry tested and accepted means each coachee has the best chance to thrive. For these reasons, the CLEARER process for coaching is what every coachee can expect during each session.

The CLEAR Coach Model was developed by Peter Hawkins in the 1980s; the process is widely used and accepted as a model that aligns with standard coaching principles. The CLEAR model asks coaches to Contract, Listen, Explore, to help the coachee set Actions, ending with a Review for accountability. I believe this model is strengthened by adding two image1additional components: Evaluate and Refine.

Contract: The coach and coachee decide the goal, expected outcomes and method for measurement at the beginning of the session.

Listen and Explore: The coach spends time guiding the coachee through exploration of the issue and hopeful outcomes. Through expert questioning and reflective listening all angles of the situation will be explored.

Actions: Together, a plan of action is developed for the coachee to implement after the coaching session.

Review: A summary of the session and feedback from the coachee will end each session.

Evaluate: As the next coaching session begins, the coach will check in with the coachee as a way of evaluating the action plan from the previous session. Results will be incorporated into the exploration and action phases mentioned above.

Refine: Refinement of the action plan as needed will help the coachee precisely target actions that will lead to success.

CLEARER is a process that is brought to life by the coach and coachee working together; the coach guides the interactions and the coachee has the opportunity to maximize their progress towards wellness, authenticity and thriving. The structure provides a road map, while allowing space for the coach and coachee to tailor each session to the exact needs present in the moment.

Coaching is an investment; you should know what you are investing in. I believe you should know what you are investing in when you decide to receive coaching–the CLEARER process provides assurance that you will receive consistent expert coaching in a predictable yet flexible structure.
