Wellness, Authenticity, Thriving

What is wellness? Wellness is different for each and every one of us. Being well is multi-dimensional; it is held in our physical health habits, our mental health and stress levels, and even extends to our social and spiritual well-being. True wellness threads  through all parts of our self and our lives. Opportunities to practice wellness are present for us all day each day–choosing healthy foods, being more physically active, taking a moment to breathe, setting and observing relationship boundaries…all of these small actions add up to overall wellness each day. In other words, we can DO wellness–wellness is a skill. Because wellness is a skill, lack of wellness can be addressed through learning new insights, skills and with support.

Like any skill, wellness can take some work. Wellness starts with activities–exercising, social engagements, self-care practices such as yoga and mindfulness. It is important to remember that activities are only the mechanism for our wellness and not the source. The source of wellness comes from a sound understanding of what we need most, what makes us feel whole, calm, rested, and loved. One must understand their own wellness needs and wants before choosing the activities that will help achieve being well; many of us start at the activities without the exploration of what wellness means to us first.

Wellness is a skill; consistent wellness leads to authentic living. When we live authentically, we thrive.

Dr. Brene Brown, social worker and researcher, defines authentic living as, “cultivating courage to be emotionally honest, to set boundaries and to allow ourselves to be vulnerable.” It is immediately clear from this beautiful and accurate definition that authentic living is not easy. To live authentically means to be your true, vulnerable yet boundaried self each day; to be open to risk and vulnerability while owning your needs, wants and goals. Lack of wellness can get in the way of authentic living. If your physical, emotional and social wellness is off-balance, authentic living may be out of reach. Living your authentic life, rooted in consistent wellness practices leads to thriving. Wellness, authentic living and thriving means something different for each of us.
